Honey

The Stringybark Creek Honey Apiary has a focus on bee-appropriate beekeeping

The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is able to make any sort of cavity into its home and even sustains colonies on comb constructed out in the open. However, with the homes we give them and how we manage them, we can take care not to work against the bee's intentions.

At Stringybark Creek Honey we  avoid stressing the colony. Coldness/heat, wetness/drought and shortage of food, or of food of adequate quality, if beyond or nearly beyond the capacity of the bee to cope with, can be expected to predispose to stress and thence disease.  Our bee keeping centres around bee hives in a fixed and natural environment.  This produces some of the highest quality raw honey.

What is Raw Honey?

Raw is exactly that – honey that has not been treated in any way. It is taken from the hive in frames designed to hold honey, cold extracted by being spun with centrifugal force, drained through a fine sieve to remove any wax particles and bottled.

Patricia

…my mum and dad said they loved the honey! When can I get some more???

Jessica

Your honey is SO good, so I’m having it on toast every morning. That is testimony to quality honey!

Our Honey

Have you ever wondered why honey tastes different and is available in different varieties/flavors?

The easiest way to think of it is similar to different smelling flowers.

A strawberry flower smells completely different from a eucalyptus tree which also means that the nectar from each flower also produces different types of nectar and hence honey variety. Our bees roam the Yarra Valley and surrounds collecting pure and natural nectar which is then converted to honey. Depending on what flowers the bees have collected nectar from will depend on what variety / flavor of honey that is produced.

All of our honey is 100% pure, raw and completely natural.

We harvest straight from our own beehives ensuring fresh and high quality produce every time.

We never heat our honey at all, not even a little bit.

Some of the health benefits of raw honey are lost when it’s heated above 37°C, so we never heat it at all.

We never filter our honey. We strain it through a mesh to remove only the larger particles like small pieces of wax, but we never filter it because filtering removes particles which have health benefits, whereas straining leaves them all in.

Stringybark Creek Honey will never go off, so feel free to stock up your cupboards. It may after a period of time go candy or crystallise, but this is a good thing as it is a sign of purity.

It also shows you that our honey has nothing artificial added to force it to stay liquid and that it is unprocessed, raw, natural and completely pure. To return the honey to liquid, simply place the jar in some warm water.

Stringybark Creek Honey is available to you the way that nature intended and we would not have it any other way.

Beeswax

The wax is made by worker bees (who are all female).

They need to consume 8 litres of honey in order to produce one litre of beeswax.  Go girl power!!
When you buy beeswax from us you can be certain that we didn’t use any chemicals to clean or prepare it for sale.
As our wax is not bleached, each time you buy it the colour may differ from the previous time.

All the wax is produced by our own bees.

Bees Wax Block 30g/1 ounce

This raw and natural beeswax comes straight from our beehives and is sold in convenient 1 ounce/30g blocks.  Please be aware this beeswax is unbleached and has not been treated or washed with chemicals.  The color will reflect the type of flora that were in flower in that season that the bees were foraging.

Bee Removal Services

We happily provide a rent free re homing service for bees in need of permanent accommodation!!

Available in Melbourne and surrounds. Whether you need to remove a bee infestation from your home or you want to remove bees from a nearby tree, we can help you!  If you ring a pest control company to come and remove the bee swarm or bee hive they will usually call beekeepers like us to come and remove the bees or charge an exorbitant rate to exterminate them.

After removing bees we will give them a good home in a nice bee hive on our honey farm with incredible views over our vineyard.

Some tips whilst you are waiting for us to arrive:

1.  Don’t try to get the swarm to move on by doing things such as spraying it with water, throwing stones at it or blowing smoke at it. These actions will only aggravate the bees and make it more difficult for the beekeeper to remove the swarm.

2.  Stay calm. When you see a swarm of bees they aren’t attacking – they’re looking for a place to set up a new nest. They will often cluster on a tree or somewhere while scout bees go off to find a new location to start a nest.

3.  Keep your children and animals well away from the bees.

4.  Wear shoes to protect your feet, in case bees have settled on the ground.

5.  DO NOT SPRAY THE BEES

Swarming occurs when a bee colony becomes too large. Half the bees will leave with the queen bee to start a new colony. Along the way they may stop and swarm at a temporary location for a couple of days until they have found a permanent location to start a new nest.

If you need to remove a nest that has been in place for a long time it can be quite a difficult removal process and it may be something we can’t accommodate.
